Great Expectations (Penguin Classics)

I read Great Expectations back in high school, but had forgotten most of it. It was the selection for our book club, so I bought it to read again.
Although it's very long, it's a wonderful book, rich with detail and timeless for it's social issues and examination of interpersonal relationships.
I had forgotten (or perhaps didn't appreciate in high school) how funny Dickens is. His sense of humor, and ability to convey emotion and atmosphere are extraordinary.
I got it too late to finish for the book club and had to consult Spark notes (which are great for summary), but I hope to finish it soon.

An interesting book, but the author doesn't tell us where any of the information comes from. I don't know how many inaccuracies crept in, but I was more than startled when he explained that a mangle - the hand-cranked squeezer that was used for removing excess water before hanging up your hand-washed laundry - was in fact used after IRONING to make your clothing super flat. I don't think so.....

On the most superficial level, it is an intimate story of kinship and love with the tumultuous backdrop of French Revolution. With Lucie's loving care, Doctor Manette struggles to maintain his sanity which is otherwise reflected by his obsessive shoe-making activities.
